Our hiring checklist

Bath re-enamelling at your home in Fisher's Row

We re-enamel plenty of period and roll-top baths, which would be difficult and expensive to replace. Doing them in place keeps an original feature. We are often asked to fix thin, worn enamel in places and staining under the taps and around the waste, on basins & shower trays, Victorian roll-tops and pressed steel baths.

You are covered for a year from the day of the repair. Just call us if there is a problem and we will come back.

What happens on the day

The work is clean and fairly quiet, so you can stay at home while we are there. Protection goes down first, then the work takes most of the day. At the end we talk you through the curing time and the aftercare.

  1. We sheet, mask and ventilate the room.
  2. Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
  3. We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
  4. We key the bath and apply a bonding primer.
  5. Several coats of finish are sprayed on, then it cures until the following day.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Mention any earlier repairs or resurfacing
  • Mention any parking restrictions or tricky access
  • Plan for the room to be out of bounds to pets and children

Advice

How to care for the repair

Much of the damage we repair could have been avoided. A few tips:

  • Store bottles off the bath
  • Have chips seen to early
  • Stick to gentle, non-abrasive cleaners
  • Respect the curing time we give you

Avoid hair dye, bath bombs and oils sitting on the surface, as they can stain. Fix dripping taps quickly.

If a previous coating is starting to peel, don’t pick at it. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so have it stripped and resurfaced.

What affects the price in Fisher's Row

Prices start from £350. Prices are worked out job by job. The main factors are:

  • How much damage there is
  • Where the damage is and how we get to it
  • How hard the colour is to match
  • Whether it’s a chip, crack, burn or wear

It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: access, material, the extent of the damage and whether we can do several items together. Send photos and you’ll get a fixed figure.

Send pictures for a quote

Phone photos are fine, there is no need for anything special. Ensure they show:

  • A coin or ruler next to the damage for scale
  • The material, if you know it
  • Any earlier repairs or coatings
  • A close-up of the damage, in focus

The quickest way to a price is to send a couple of photos through our quote form or ring us. We’ll say right away if a repair is the right fix.

Honest limits

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Problems we can’t see until an old finish comes off
  • A bath that is rusted through
  • A metal bath with a through crack

Send us pictures and we’ll tell you honestly.

Materials we work on in Fisher's Row

  • Pressed steel baths
  • Acrylic baths
  • Basins & shower trays
  • Cast iron baths
  • Victorian roll-tops

Different materials, different repairs

Pressed steel

Steel baths re-enamel well, once any rust has been treated. Steel frequently rusts by the plughole, so we check it carefully.

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are the classic candidate for re-enamelling. The body lasts for generations; only the enamel wears, so a new finish makes them look new again.

DIY kit or professional repair?

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair will not last.

Repair or replace: which is better?

If the bath is sound, re-enamelling is usually much cheaper than replacing it, once you add removal, plumbing, tiling and decorating to the price of a new bath. It’s much quicker too. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. Compared with replacing, a repair is typically a fraction of the price, because there’s no removal, plumbing or making good. The quote lists exactly what you’re paying for.
