Bath re-enamelling in No Man's Land, done in place

After re-enamelling, the bath has a smooth, glossy, new-looking surface, but without the cost and upheaval of a refit. It suits anyone happy with the bathroom apart from the bath. We are often asked to fix an original cast iron bath that needs restoring and worn patches where water runs and sits, across basins & shower trays, cast iron baths and Victorian roll-tops.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. If anything is not right, ring us and we’ll come back.

Why repair rather than replace?

A refit takes several trades and several days. Re-enamelling takes one technician and usually one day, with the bath ready the next day. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. The price reflects the work involved, not your postcode. You’ll see the full price before you book, with nothing added on the day.

What we do, step by step

From the moment we arrive, we keep the work contained to the one room. Surfaces nearby are masked off, the job takes the best part of a day, depending on what we find, and we finish with a tidy-up and a look at the finished work together.

  1. We check the bath and agree the finish with you.
  2. Taps, tiles and the floor are masked off.
  3. We degrease the bath, fix any damage and key the surface.
  4. Primer and finish coats are applied.
  5. The masking comes off, we tidy up and tell you when it can be used.

No Man's Land questions

What happens if you find more damage?

We stop, show you and agree any change before carrying on. Nothing extra is done without your say-so.

Can you price it without visiting?

Nearly always. If pictures do not show enough, we’ll ask for another angle.

Do you need to take the bath out?

Not at all. We work on the bath in place, with the room protected and ventilated.

How soon can you come?

Your quote comes with available dates. Tell us if you need it done quickly.

Does someone need to be in?

Yes. The technician needs access to the room for the visit, at a time that suits you.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes: twelve months. If there is a problem with the work in that time, we come back and put it right.

How long is the bath unusable?

Most baths are done in a day and can be used the day after. We give you timings with the quote.

What happens after I send pictures?

We look at the photos and reply with a fixed quote and some dates. If anything’s unclear, we will ask for another photo.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

If you do try a kit, read the instructions carefully, make sure the area is clean and completely dry, and don’t use it until it has fully cured. If it fails, we can still put it right.

Kits are cheap and easy to find, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is generally cheaper.

Aftercare tips

After the repair has cured, a few habits help it last:

  • Avoid suction-cup mats
  • Don’t use the bath until it has fully cured
  • Keep toiletries on a shelf rather than in the bath
  • Do not leave a chip unrepaired

Wipe the bath dry after use where you can, especially in hard water areas, and rinse away any product left on the surface.

The longer worn enamel is left, the rougher it gets, and any rust spreads underneath. Resurfacing sooner means less repair work first.

What your bath is made of matters

Pressed steel

Pressed steel baths take a new finish well, as long as any rust is dealt with first. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we pay close attention there.

Cast iron

A cast iron bath is heavy enough that most people never want to move it. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that is what we repair.

What we are called out for in No Man's Land

A dull surface stains and holds dirt, and cleaning harder only makes it worse. That’s the point where re-enamelling makes sense.

Typical reasons for a call-out include:

  • Thin, worn enamel in places
  • An old resurfacing that’s failing
  • A period or roll-top bath worth keeping
  • Lots of chips and rust spots

Before you book anyone

  • Is the price fixed, and does it include VAT?
