How we handle bath re-enamelling in Sideway

Re-enamelling is a one-day job for most baths, and you can use the bath the following day. Taps, tiles, panels and plumbing all stay in place. We’re frequently asked to fix an old resurfacing that’s failing and a roll-top that’s seen better days, in pressed steel baths, acrylic baths and Victorian roll-tops.

We stand behind the work with a one-year guarantee.

Should you replace it?

Replacing the bath means a plumber, removing a heavy bath, making good the walls and tiles and days without a bathroom. Re-enamelling renews the whole surface without moving it. Our bath re-enamelling starts from £350. What it costs depends on how much damage there is and what kind, what it’s made of and how many items we do on one visit. You get a fixed quote from your pictures, so there are no surprises on the day.

Aftercare tips

How the surface is treated afterwards matters. Here’s what we suggest:

  • Wipe the bath dry after use in hard water areas
  • Repair dripping taps early
  • Leave the bath for the full curing time before using it
  • Have chips seen to early

Rinse the bath and wipe it over after use, particularly where water is hard, to stop limescale building up.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

What we can’t put right

We’ll always be straight with you, so here’s what a repair can’t fix:

  • Steel that has corroded right through
  • Acrylic that moves when you stand in it
  • A cast iron or steel bath that is cracked right through

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think.

What we work on

  • Basins & shower trays
  • Pressed steel baths
  • Victorian roll-tops
  • Cast iron baths
  • Acrylic baths

How it works

Expect a friendly, tidy visit. We agree the arrival time in advance, cover and mask the work area, and get on with the job, which normally takes the best part of a day. If we find something your photos didn’t show, we will explain it before carrying on.

  1. The bathroom is protected and ventilation set up.
  2. Old sealant is cut out and the bath is deep cleaned.
  3. We repair chips, rust spots and pitting.
  4. The surface is keyed and primed for the new finish.
  5. The new finish is sprayed on in several coats and left to cure until the next day.

How to prepare

  • Clear the area around the damage
  • Let the surface dry out before the visit
  • Keep pets and children out of the room while we work

Should I try a DIY kit first?

The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We clean and key the area properly, mix the colour to your surface and finish it to the same sheen, then guarantee it for a year.

If you’re set on a kit, follow its instructions closely, and don’t use it until it has fully cured. If it fails, we can still put it right.

What bath re-enamelling costs

Prices start from £350. We charge the same across the UK, including Sideway. The price reflects:

  • Whether we combine several jobs
  • The type of damage
  • Previous DIY repairs that have to come out
  • How easy the damage is to reach

Our prices are the same across the UK, with no extra for Sideway. What changes the price is the job itself: the material, the amount of damage and how many items.

Getting a price from pictures

When you take your photos, a few simple things make all the difference:

  • The material, if you know it
  • Something in shot to show the size
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • A clear, close picture of the problem area

For a price in Sideway, the easiest route is pictures: a close-up, a wider shot and your postcode. You will get a fixed quote with dates to choose from.

Work for landlords and builders

Builders use us to fix snagging damage before handover. Several plots can be done in one visit to keep costs down.

Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, putting right damage done during fitting. We’re CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.

Different materials, different repairs

Acrylic

Acrylic is light and warm to the touch, but it relies on good support. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, and the outside can be refinished too.
