How we handle bath repair in The Avenues

Small damage on a bath is worth repairing early. On steel and cast iron, exposed metal starts to rust, and on acrylic, a crack keeps spreading while the bath flexes. Repairing it stops the damage getting worse. If you’re dealing with holes from dropped items and an old repair that has yellowed or come loose, we can normally put it right.

A one-year guarantee comes with the work, just as it does everywhere we cover.

Repair or replace in The Avenues?

For damage in one or two places, a repair is the obvious choice. It costs far less than a new bath plus fitting, it takes one visit, and nothing else in the room changes. Prices start from £95. It helps to know what pushes a price up or down: the amount of damage, the material, access to the area, and how many jobs we do in one trip. Send photos and you will get a fixed figure.

Why choose Surface Doctor in The Avenues

  • CHAS and Constructionline accredited
  • Dust sheets down, tidy finish
  • No need to remove anything
  • One visit for most repairs

Take a look at our prices page and bath cost comparison.

Should I try a DIY kit first?

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The trouble is that kit repairs frequently look fine at first and then fail, and then the old filler has to be removed first.

What a professional repair adds is preparation, colour matching and finishing. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, and the work is guaranteed.

The process

Your technician turns up when we said we would, introduces themselves and looks over the damage before anything else. Dust sheets and masking tape go down before we open a single tin. Most visits take a few hours, depending on the damage, and the room is left clean and tidy.

  1. First, we check the damage against your photos and agree the plan.
  2. Any rust and loose material comes out, and the area is degreased.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. We tint the finish by hand to match the bath.
  5. The repair is polished to the same gloss as the bath and left to cure.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Let us know if it has been repaired before
  • Mention if the room is upstairs or in a flat
  • Move bottles, mats and clutter away from the area

Advice

Questions from The Avenues

How long before I can use the bath?

Typically the next day. We will tell you the exact curing time when we finish.

Do you come to The Avenues?

We do. Technicians travel to The Avenues from across the region, and the price is the same as everywhere else.

Will the repair last?

A properly prepared repair should last a long time, and it’s guaranteed for a year. Gentle cleaning helps it last.

Can tenants book a repair?

Of course. Ask your landlord first, and we can send them the quote if that helps.

Will I be able to see the repair?

On a bath in good condition, a colour matched repair is very hard to spot. On worn enamel, it can look shinier than the rest.

Will there be a smell?

It depends on the job, but often a little. Ventilation keeps it to a minimum.

How do I book?

A close-up, a wider photo and your postcode. Then we’ll agree a date.

Do you work for landlords and businesses?

Yes, often. We can quote for several properties together and work between tenancies.

Honest limits

It helps to know what we cannot do too:

  • A bath that moves underfoot, until its support is fixed
  • Leaking fittings, which need a plumber
  • A steel bath rusted through

Not sure? Send photos and we will give you a straight answer before you book.

What we work on

  • Cast iron enamel
  • Acrylic
  • Pressed steel enamel
  • Whirlpool & spa baths
  • Roll-top & freestanding

Looking after it afterwards

Good habits make a big difference to how long a repair lasts:

  • Check that an acrylic bath doesn’t move when you stand in it
  • A dripping tap stains enamel, so fix it early
  • Store metal items away from the bath
  • Get any new chip repaired before it rusts

Look after the repair the same way as the bath: a soft cloth and washing-up liquid is all it needs. Keep scouring pads and gritty cleaners away from it.

Avoid standing in a cracked acrylic bath until it’s fixed. Every use opens the crack a little more, and water can get through to the floor below.

When to call us in The Avenues

Glass and heavy bottles cause more chips than anything else, closely followed by shower heads. Fittings cause damage too: water sits around them, and any chip there soon rusts.

Signs it’s time to call us include:

  • Damage beneath the taps
  • Cracks in an acrylic bath
  • A kit repair that didn’t last
  • Rust by the waste and overflow

What to look for in a quote

  • When it can be used again
  • Whether the price is fixed and includes VAT
  • How long the guarantee is and what it covers
  • What prep work is covered

Our hiring checklist

Materials and what they mean for the repair

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. They do not rust, but they can crack, scratch or be holed, and cracks need support from behind to stay fixed.
