Bath repair across FY4: what to expect
Bath repair is our most common job. A chip by the taps, a crack in the base and a rust spot by the plughole are all fixed without removing the bath, usually in a single visit. We’re frequently asked to fix an old repair that has yellowed or come loose and chips along the edge of the bath, across pressed steel enamel, whirlpool & spa baths and cast iron enamel.
It’s a tidy, low-fuss visit. We confirm the time with you beforehand, protect the area, and get on with the job, which usually takes two to three hours for most chips. If we find something your photos didn’t show, we’ll explain it before carrying on.
- Dust sheets and masking go down around the bath.
- The damaged area is cleaned, keyed and degreased.
- We fill it, let it set, then sand it flush.
- We match both the colour and the shine.
- We clear up and give you the curing time, normally until the day after.
Cost
Prices start from £95. Set against the cost of replacement, a repair is typically a fraction of the price, because nothing has to be taken out, refitted or made good. The quote lists exactly what you are paying for.
Why choose Surface Doctor

Different materials, different repairs
Pressed steel
Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so the metal is treated and sealed before the repair.
Acrylic
Acrylic feels warm and is light, but it relies on good support. Cracks are strengthened from behind before the front is finished.
What a repair cannot fix
Before you book, it’s worth knowing the limits:
- Leaking fittings, which need a plumber
- Metal that has corroded all the way through
- A whole bath that’s dull or worn, where a full re-enamel is the better fix
Can I fix it myself?
The difference between a kit and a professional repair is mostly in the preparation and colour. We prepare the area properly, mix the colour on site and polish the finish to match, and the work is guaranteed.
DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: kits come in a few standard shades, and without proper cleaning and keying the filler often lifts.
Landlord and trade work in FY4
Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, fixing chips and scratches before handover so nothing needs replacing. We’re CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.
Rented homes see more wear and tear, and replacing items every time a tenant leaves is expensive. A repair between tenancies is a cheaper way to keep the property in good order.
Common problems we fix in FY4
A bath gets knocked about more than you’d think: everyday items get dropped into it all the time, and fittings press hard against the enamel. Over time, chips and rust spots are almost inevitable.
You may need us if you’ve spotted:
- Damage beneath the taps
- Holes from dropped items
- A cracked acrylic bath
- Damage done while the bathroom was being fitted
FY4: your questions answered
Will there be a smell?
A little, depending on the job. Open windows and an extractor fan help.
Can you price it without visiting?
Nearly always. We only ask to see it in person if the pictures can’t show what we need.
Will it make a mess?
Dust sheets and masking go down before we start, and tidy up before we leave.
Is it OK to have pets in the house?
We ask you to keep children and pets out of the room while we work and until it has cured. The rest of the house is unaffected.
I’m a tenant. Can you help?
We’re happy to deal with the tenant, landlord or agent. Just make sure the landlord agrees.
What do you need from me?
Photos of the damage, a picture of the entire bath and your postcode. After that, we just agree a date.
Do you repair coloured baths?
Yes, we match coloured baths too. The colour is tinted by hand on the day.
