Bath repair across M3: what to expect

A repair fixes just the damaged area and blends it into the rest of the bath, which costs far less than replacing a fitted bath and the tiles around it. You can normally use the bath the following day. Common call-outs are for a chip where the taps sit and rust spots around the plughole, in whirlpool & spa baths, pressed steel enamel and cast iron enamel.

On the day itself, there is little for you to do. Let us in and show us the room, and we will get on with it. The job generally runs to a few hours, depending on the damage, including clearing up.

  1. First, we check the damage against your photos and agree the plan.
  2. Loose enamel, rust and dirt are removed so the repair can bond.
  3. The damage is filled in layers and shaped to the curve of the bath.
  4. We tint the finish by hand to match the bath.
  5. Finally, it’s polished to match the shine and left to cure.

Signs you need bath repair

Rust tends to begin where water collects, around the waste, under the taps or in an old chip. Water on bare metal causes rust that creeps under the surrounding enamel.

Customers usually contact us about:

  • An old repair that has yellowed or come loose
  • Holes from dropped items
  • Hairline or through cracks in acrylic
  • Rust by the waste and overflow

What a repair cannot fix

In fairness, some problems need a different fix:

  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)
  • A bath worn all over, where resurfacing makes more sense
  • Cracks in parts of an acrylic bath we can’t get to from below

Repairs by material

Cast iron

Cast iron is heavy and rigid, with a fused enamel surface. Chips can rust if left, but the body of the bath lasts a very long time, so it’s always worth repairing.

Pressed steel

Steel baths and trays have a thin metal body under the enamel. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

DIY repairs versus a professional job

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but the repairs we redo most frequently are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is generally cheaper.

Work for landlords and builders

Builders, developers and site managers book us for snagging repairs, putting right damage done during fitting so nothing needs replacing. We are CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.

We work for landlords, letting agents and housing providers in M3 as well as householders. Repairing between tenancies keeps void periods short, and it costs much less than replacing.
