How we handle bath re-enamelling in Memsie

After re-enamelling, the bath has a smooth, glossy, new-looking surface, but without the cost and upheaval of a refit. It’s ideal if you like your bathroom but not the state of the bath. We’re frequently asked to fix a period or roll-top bath worth keeping and wear marks under the taps, across cast iron baths, acrylic baths and basins & shower trays.

The work is covered for a year after we finish. Just call us if there’s a problem and we will sort it.

Common problems we fix in Memsie

Hard water speeds up the wear, and abrasive cleaners do the most damage.

Keep an eye out for any of the following:

  • Lots of chips and rust spots
  • Staining under the taps and around the waste
  • Enamel that is lost its shine and feels rough
  • An original cast iron bath that needs restoring

Our hiring checklist

Repair or replace: which is better?

When the bathroom is fine apart from the bath’s finish, re-enamelling is the least disruptive fix. Nothing else is disturbed. Resurfacing from £350, with every job priced individually. Every job is a little different, so we price each one individually. The size and type of damage, the material and access all play a part, and doing several things on one visit costs less than separate visits.

Different materials, different repairs

Roll-top and period baths

Freestanding roll-tops can be done inside and out, with the outside refinished as well.

Pressed steel

Pressed steel baths take a new finish well, as long as any rust is dealt with first. Rust around the waste is common on steel, so we pay close attention there.

Looking after it afterwards

To keep it looking its best:

  • Dry the bath after use to stop limescale
  • Rinse off hair dye, oils and bath bombs straight away
  • A dripping tap should be fixed promptly
  • Store bottles off the bath

Avoid hair dye, bath bombs and oils sitting on the surface, because they can mark the finish. Fix dripping taps quickly.

Leave a peeling coating alone. Water gets under it and the damage spreads, so it’s better to have it stripped and redone.

Can I fix it myself?

DIY kits are sold for most surfaces, and they can tidy up a tiny mark. Where they fall down is colour and preparation: they come in a handful of shades, and if the surface is not prepared the repair won’t last.

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but the repairs we redo most frequently are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Doing it properly first is generally the cheaper route.

Memsie: your questions answered

How the visit works

When we visit, we arrive at the time we have agreed, cover the area with dust sheets and masking, and set to work. Expect it to take a full day. We tidy up before we leave and tell you when it’s ready to use.

  1. First we look the bath over and confirm the finish.
  2. Everything around the bath is masked and covered.
  3. The bath is degreased, repaired and keyed.
  4. Primer and finish coats are applied.
  5. The masking comes off, we tidy up and tell you when it can be used.

Getting ready for the visit

  • Ensure the room can be ventilated
  • Keep a parking space free if you can

Pricing is simple: snap the damage close up and then the whole item, send them over with your postcode, and you will get a fixed price back. Quotes are free and no obligation.
