Repair or replace: which is better?

A repair makes sense whenever the damage is localised. It’s a fraction of the cost of a new bath and fitting, it takes one visit, and nothing else in the room changes. Prices start from £95. We don’t add extras on the day. The price we quote from your photos is the price you pay, unless the damage turns out to be different, in which case we talk to you first.

Bath repair at your home in Stenson

Small damage on a bath is worth repairing early. On steel and cast iron, exposed metal starts to rust, and on acrylic, a crack keeps spreading while the bath flexes. Repairing it stops the damage getting worse. Whether it’s rust by the waste and overflow and an old repair that has yellowed or come loose, we can generally put it right, on acrylic, roll-top & freestanding and cast iron enamel alike.

All our work is covered by our one-year guarantee, wherever you are in Derbyshire.

Keeping it looking good

Simple care helps the repair last. Our advice:

  • Put a towel in the bath if you are working above it
  • Do not scrub with anything abrasive
  • A dripping tap stains enamel, so fix it early
  • Give the bath a quick rinse after use

Use gentle, non-abrasive cleaners and avoid dropping heavy items on the repaired area. Deal with new chips early, before rust sets in.

Avoid standing in a cracked acrylic bath until it’s fixed. Every use opens the crack a little more, and water can get through to the floor below.

What a repair can’t fix

We will not take on work that won’t last, so here’s what a repair can’t put right:

  • A whole bath that is dull or worn, where a full re-enamel is the better fix
  • Cracks in acrylic we cannot reach from underneath
  • Leaks from the waste or overflow fittings (a plumber’s job)

If in doubt, send pictures and we’ll say what we think before booking.

What happens on the day

From the moment we arrive, the aim is to do the job without disturbing the rest of your home. Surfaces nearby are masked off, the work takes a few hours, and we finish by cleaning up and talking you through the result.

  1. We start by cleaning the damage and taking out loose enamel and rust.
  2. We fill the damage and sand it flush with the surrounding surface.
  3. The colour is mixed on the spot to match your bath.
  4. We build up the finish and polish it into the surrounding enamel.
  5. Once it has cured, generally by the day after, the bath is ready to use.

Preparing for the visit

  • Rust by the waste and overflow
  • Damage beneath the taps

10 questions to ask before booking

Repairs by material

Pressed steel

Under the enamel of a steel bath is thin metal. Exposed steel rusts quickly, so we treat and seal the metal before filling.

Composite and resin

Stone resin and composite baths are heavy and solid. Chips and scratches are filled and matched, just like other baths.

Landlord and trade work in Stenson

We also carry out snagging repairs for builders and developers, fixing chips and scratches before handover so nothing needs replacing. We are CHAS, Constructionline and SafeContractor accredited.

We regularly work with letting and managing agents. Send the address, pictures and access details and we’ll handle the rest.

Questions from Stenson

Can you repair several things at once?

Yes, and it’s often cheaper. Send pictures of everything together and we’ll quote them together.

Do you repair coloured baths?

Yes. The colour is mixed on site to suit your bath, including pastel and older colours.

Is there a guarantee?

All our work carries our one-year guarantee. We’ll explain what it covers when we quote.

Can rust on a bath be repaired?

Yes. We remove the rust and loose enamel, fill the area, then colour-match the finish.

Does someone need to be in?

Someone needs to let us in and show us the job. You do not need to watch us work.

Is it worth repairing rather than replacing?

Generally, yes. A repair skips the removal, fitting and redecorating. We will be honest if it’s not worth it.

When can I have a bath again?

Most baths can be used the day after. We will tell you the exact curing time when we finish.

Will I be able to see the repair?

On a bath in good condition, a colour-matched repair is very hard to spot. On older, dull enamel the repair can look glossier than the area around it.

DIY kit or professional repair?

We understand the appeal of fixing it yourself. The risk is that a kit repair hides the damage for a while, then fails, and the old filler has to come out before a proper repair.

For a hairline mark somewhere you will never see, a kit may be enough. For anything you look at every day, anything that has rusted, cracked or holed, or anything on a coloured surface, a professional repair is worth it.
