How bath repair works in SA3

Most bath damage, from chips and cracks to rust spots and holes, is repaired in place. Nothing is unplumbed, your tiles stay as they are, and the finish is matched to the rest of the bath. Our technicians work on whirlpool & spa baths, roll-top & freestanding and pressed steel enamel, and people most often call us about a hole punched through by something heavy and rust spots around the plughole.

The work is clean and fairly quiet, so you can carry on at home. Protection goes down first, then the job itself takes a few hours. At the end we talk you through the curing time and the aftercare.

  1. We clean the area and remove any loose enamel or rust.
  2. We fill the damage and sand it flush with the surrounding surface.
  3. We mix the colour on the day to match your bath’s exact shade.
  4. We build up the finish and polish it into the surrounding enamel.
  5. We leave it to cure; you can usually use the bath the day after.

Pricing in SA3

Different materials, different repairs

Cast iron

Cast iron baths are so heavy that repairing in place makes obvious sense. Only the enamel surface wears or chips, and that’s what we repair.

Acrylic

An acrylic bath is a moulded sheet strengthened from below. There’s no rust, but cracks, holes and scratches happen, and cracks need support from behind to stay fixed.

Aftercare tips

Aftercare is simple:

  • Keep abrasive pads and gritty cleaners away from the bath
  • Rinse the bath after use, especially in hard water areas
  • A dripping tap stains enamel, so fix it early
  • Cover the bath during DIY or decorating

There’s nothing special to do after a repair, beyond gentle cleaning. Skip bleach and gritty creams.

Small chips are quick to repair. Left alone, they stain and can rust, so it’s worth getting them done early.

Repairing versus replacing

If the rest of the bath is in good condition, a repair is almost always the better choice. It costs less, takes less time and causes far less upheaval, and you keep the bath you chose. If the whole surface is worn, re-enamelling may make more sense, and we’ll tell you.

Can I fix it myself?

If you’ve already tried a DIY fix, that’s fine. We take the old repair out and do it properly, so it doesn’t stop a professional repair. It does add a little time, so tell us about it when you send pictures.

It’s tempting to reach for a kit, but the repairs we redo most often are DIY ones that have discoloured or lifted. Getting it right first time is usually cheaper.

What we are called out for in SA3

The usual cause is something heavy dropped into the bath, and building work is a common culprit. Acrylic baths crack for a different reason: poor support underneath, so the bath flexes when it’s full.

Look out for these signs:

  • Snagging damage from a refit
  • A kit repair that didn’t last
  • A hole punched through by something heavy
  • Cracks in an acrylic bath

SA3 questions

Can you repair a crack in an acrylic bath?

Generally, yes, if we can reach the underside to reinforce it. Check under the bath panel, or send us a photo.

Is a bath repair permanent?

Yes, if it’s prepared properly and the bath is sound. It carries our one-year guarantee.

I tried a repair kit. Can you fix it?

Yes, we do this often. The old material comes out, any rust is treated, then we repair it properly.

Can pets and children be at home?

Yes, as long as they stay out of the room we’re working in. We will let you know when it’s safe to use again.

Is a holed acrylic bath repairable?

Frequently, if there’s access underneath. We back the hole, fill it and refinish the surface.

What happens if you find more damage?

The price is fixed for what the photos show. If there’s more, we will tell you before starting.

Can you price it without visiting?

Yes, almost always. A close-up and a wider photo are enough to give a fixed quote.
